Recent trends involving U.S. citizens facing oftentimes-preventable problems while abroad highlight the need to better publicize the State Department's travel advisories and detailed safety information for every country around the world. That's why the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Consular Affairs engages in a public awareness campaign focused on safe travel to help Americans make safer decisions—and avoid preventable crises—when traveling abroad.
In a travel culture shaped by algorithms, anecdotes, and influencers, travel.state.gov is the only source with the authority, real-time guidance, local-law visibility, and official responsibility to help Americans prepare for what most international travel content leaves out. Travelers should make visiting travel.state.gov a key part of their planning process, from detailed travel checklists and the latest country-specific advisories to STEP enrollment (Smart Traveler Enrollment Program) and more. The campaign reminds travelers that travel.state.gov is the essential resource for staying one step ahead on international travel—STEP, advisories, and destination information.
Additionally, the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Consular Affairs is proud to share our campaign designed to emphasize the importance of going through the official source (travel.state.gov) when applying for or renewing a U.S. passport. Only the U.S. Department of State can issue U.S. passports, but we have seen an increase in the number of third-party entities trying to pose as passport providers. This campaign aims to protect U.S. citizens from being scammed into paying more by these third-party websites or sharing their personal data with unofficial, non-governmental entities.
